Construction Update

Building Task Force Report

The Bids have been received from the sub-contractors. Demolition should begin the week of September 28th. That same week, the north driveway to the church parking lot will be closed. During construction, everyone must use the 30th Street driveway to the parking lot. The north entrance to the church building will still be open. The Building Task Force will be meeting the first and third Tuesday of every month through December. Any church member wishing to attend a Building Task Force meeting is welcome. If you do not wish to attend a meeting, but have comments or concerns about the activities of the task force or would like a particular issue discussed at the next meeting, please contact a task force member. The members are Vivian Hale, Pat Dean, Mark Harper, Barbara Williams, Jeff Roberts, Judy Ricketts, Bob Weetman, Ken Duggins, Jerry Carter, Dan Fisher, and Ross Estabrook.

Interior Committee Report

After the Building Task Force selected a contractor, the task force was divided into two committees – the Construction Committee and the Interior Committee. The committee arranged for the removal of the Last Supper wall hanging. It was returned to the woman who made it. The banners that hung in the sanctuary were taken down and professionally dry-cleaned. The Presbyterian Women paid for the cleaning. The banners are now being stored at a church member’s home. Carpet and flooring have been chosen for the new sanctuary. Some bricks have been set aside for those who would like one as a keepsake.

Originally, the Building Task Force had thought we would keep the old pews since purchasing new ones would put us over our budget. An estimate to refurbish, reupholster, and store the old pews was obtained. Most of the pews are thirty-nine years old and the remaining ones are thirty-five years old. Because of the age of the pews and the expense involved in refurbishing, reupholstering, and storing, it was decided to purchase new pews. The old pews were sold for $3500 to the Plainview Gospel Church in Guys Mills, Pennsylvania. The four choir pews were kept and are in the halls of the church. The choir has pledged $4700 toward choir chairs. Presbyterian Women have committed the entire proceeds from the 2009 bazaar to the New Pew Fund. Please support PW and make this the most profitable bazaar ever! Specific fund raising activities for new pews and opportunities for members, organizations that meet at the church, etc. to donate to the New Pew Fund will be explained in the November Tidings.

Soundboard Operators

Your assistance is needed to help with the soundboards used for our worship services. Our current operators are in need of added volunteers to learn the boards and assist as the new year approaches. Please contact Jerry Carter @ 852-4383 if you are interested.  We will schedule training times once we have a list of volunteers.

Can You Smile, Greet, and Say “Hi”?
You’re The One We Want!

One of the ideas which came out of the joint officers meeting in June was to develop a pool of people who would enjoy being ushers at both the worship services each Sunday. Many have done this in the past, others would like to do so but have never been asked. If you fall into either category, here is your chance to serve in an incredibly easy yet influential way. What’s required? Greeting regular attendees and visitors who arrive for worship; offering bulletins and other items which worship attendees might need; collecting the offering at both services. Would you like to help but you’re unsure as to how to do what is needed? No problem! The Worship Ministry Team will walk anyone through what is required and make sure you feel comfortable with this form of service when you are ready. Either contact Vivian Hale (852-3641; click to email), Frank Mansell (291-0308; click to email), or sign-up on the sheet outside the church office. Thank you for being willing to make our church a welcoming place!

Thank You for Your Hospitality

The Worship Ministry Team and Hospitality Group thanks everyone who has responded so positively to our request for help on Sunday mornings. Many people have shared coffeecakes, donuts, muffins, and other breakfast foods with the congregation, others have helped place food out or with clean up after church. If you would like to join in this effort, or have helped before, please know you will find opportunities to sign-up for this ministry on the bulletin board outside the office. What’s needed?

Providing Food – If you enjoy baking breads, cookies, or don’t mind buying cheese, crackers, breakfast foods, or other snacks, then consider signing up on the sheet outside the office for a specific week.

Setting Up and Cleaning Up on Sundays – For some of us, it is hard to commit to other meetings or events throughout the week, but Sundays are a time we can assist with important tasks. Perhaps you could help set the food out before the 9:00 service, or clean up the food after the 11:00 service? This would not include any of the ushering duties – just the food!

Brewing the Coffee – There is no doubt this is the most important preparation made for Sunday morning – certainly more important than Frank’s sermon preparation! If you live close by or don’t mind coming by on Saturdays, it takes 10 minutes to set up the coffee and plug it in to a timer which turns it on early Sunday mornings.

Thank you for all you have done to assist making Sundays warm and welcoming for visitors and members at John Knox, and if you have any questions, you may contact Frank Mansell (291-0308), Ann Hamel (243-3170), or Vivian Hale (852-3641).

Email Addresses

Do we have your email address? Send your email address to Frank (click to email) or Barbara (click to email), and we will add you to our list for news and events at the church!

Recycling at John Knox

We have a paper recycling bin on the church’s north parking lot near the High School Road entrance for your convenience. This bin is provided by Abitibi Recycling Corporation, and all monies received for recycling will go to support the church’s ministry and mission.

We can take the following types of paper:

Newspaper
Magazines
Catalogs
Mail and Envelopes
Folders
Fax, Copy and Office Paper
Colored Paper

We cannot take cardboard or phonebooks. Be sure to shred any documents which have personal information on them.

The church is paid by the ton, so bring your papers to church on Sundays and during the week, and let’s help keep God’s world clean!

The Speedway Co-Op Preschool now has an aluminum recycling bin in our church parking lot, by the storage barn in the southwest corner. Now, when you bring your newspapers and other paper recycling to John Knox, you can also bring your aluminum cans and know that you are supporting the wonderful ministry we host in the Co-Op Preschool. Thanks for your support!

Earn Funds for John Knox

Ponderosa Steakhouse is offering the church an easy way to earn funds for the church. Just visit the Ponderosa anytime and ten percent of your sale will be given to the church.

Offer is good any time a church member goes there to eat. Just give your receipt to the cashier or manager and write the church’s name on the back of the receipt. This can’t be used with senior discounts or coupons. A check will be written to the church at the end of month.

Provocative Proposals

Click to view the Provocative Proposals that were presented by the Discovery Team to the congregation on Sunday, October 23, 2005 during the "Shaping Our Future Summit." These four Provocative Proposals are statements which cover four different areas of our life as a congregation: Worship, Education, Fellowship, and Mission. What is a Provocative Proposal? It is a statement which incorporates the stories we have heard you share about John Knox, and then suggests some future direction we might be led in according to those strengths. They are statements which are meant to stir discussion, and to reflect how we feel God has been, is, and will present with us as a congregation.
